The Book of Life is an interview-format podcast about Jewish kidlit, mostly, with occasional coverage of YA/adult books, music, film and web,  established in December 2005. Host Heidi Rabinowitz is a Judaica librarian at Congregation B'nai Israel of Boca Raton, FL, and the podcast reveals the backstory of materials that might be found in a synagogue library like Heidi's. As director of the Feldman Children's Library at B'nai Israel, Heidi focuses on material aimed at youth, but the podcast does cover a range of subject matter for all ages. If you are a creator of Jewish books, music, film, or web content, please see our submission guidelines.

Want to be interviewed?

The Book of Life Podcast covers Jewish kidlit, mostly, with occasional coverage of Jewish books for teens and adults, albums, films, websites, or other cultural artifacts that could be found in a Judaic library like our sponsor, the Feldman Children's Library at Congregation B'nai Israel of Boca Raton, Florida. If you have created such a work, then you are welcome to submit it to The Book of Life to be considered for an interview.

Guidelines:

  • Material for early childhood and middle grade readers is most welcome.
  • Young adult literature and works for adults may be considered, but children's books are given highest priority.
  • Jewish content is required; Jewish authorship is not.
  • We rarely cover Torah-related ("Old Testament") stories written from a non-Jewish perspective.
  • We rarely cover war-related or Holocaust-related materials, due to "Holocaust fatigue" on the part of host Heidi Rabinowitz.
  • We rarely cover memoirs.
  • We rarely cover scholarly works.

To be considered for an interview, email bookoflifepodcast@gmail.com with a description of your work. If we are interested, we will ask you to mail a hard copy (print book, CD, DVD, etc.) or digital copy. Please be patient while waiting for your submission to be reviewed: it may take several months. Heidi's "to be read" pile is very large!

If selected, you will be contacted to schedule an interview. Interviews are performed by Zoom or in person when convenient. We audio record the interviews and edit them before publishing. Because there are usually many recordings already in the queue, it may take several months before your interview is published.

Interviewees who live in Canada or will be visiting the Toronto area may be interviewed by Anne Dublin, The Book of Life's Canadian Correspondent.

Guests should plan to help promote their appearances on The Book of Life. Please see below for suggestions.

We look forward to your submissions!
